These rural home stays are a beautiful example of tourism done well. Clean, tidy and well organized with a great sense of traditional culture, they are not only an economic resource but a tool for sustainable development within the family and community.
Home-grown produce such as milk, honey, eggs, fruit and vegetables are a significant draw to tourists in these areas but are also gaining extra profit from the local market. The hosts told us how much they enjoy continuing their traditional lifestyle without the need to travel abroad or to towns for employment.
Many homes make use of hydro or solar energy and some enterprising places have even introduced cook stoves running from methane gas (from cow or buffalo dung) which saves time on collecting wood. In villages such as Tangting, home stays have been fitted with chimneys over the kitchen fires which significantly reduces the amount of harmful smoke. A local rubbish collection scheme has also been introduced in this area.
The National Home Stay Association hopes that the introduction of national standards and greater access to information and training will draw from Nepal's successful stories to promote more uniform, sustained development in rural areas across Nepal.
